Few figures in rugby have had a career as eventful as Jones. The 64-year-old coach has done everything, from guiding Australia to the 2003 Rugby World Cup final to masterminding Japan’s 2015 World Cup triumph over South Africa.

Considered one of the most astute tacticians in the sport, Jones has coached at the highest level for decades, turning teams into world-class contenders. His long career has seen him coach national teams like Japan, England and Australia alongside various club teams and more.

The Australian was in charge of England for seven years, leading them to back-to-back Six Nations Championship wins in 2016 and 2017 and a run to the 2019 World Cup final.

After leaving the England job in 2022, he had a short stint with Australia again. After stepping down as Australia’s head coach in 2023, Jones wasted no time in returning to international rugby. Now, he’s back in charge of Japan and looking to script another unforgettable chapter in his already illustrious career.

Express Sport takes a look at Eddie Jones’ career…

Eddie Jones net worth and salary

Jones’ long career in rugby has earned him plenty of accolades and a healthy paycheck. The Australian coach takes home an annual salary of approximately £650,000, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the game.

Breaking it down, that’s about £54,000 per month, £12,500 per week, or £1,800 each day. And it’s no surprise. His experience and ability to deliver results have made him a sought-after figure in world rugby.

Even then, it is less than what he was earning with England, which was to the tune of £1.2 million a year.

Reportedly, his net worth is about £4 million.

Eddie Jones wife

Jones met his wife, Hiroko, long before he became one of rugby’s most respected coaches. The pair crossed paths while teaching at Sydney International Grammar School.

Jones specialised in geography, while Hiroko taught Japanese. Their connection grew beyond the classroom, and they have been together ever since. The couple have a daughter, , who now has a family of her own.

As Jones’ career took him across the world, Hiroko remained a constant presence by his side. When he took over as England’s head coach in 2015, they settled in England, adapting to life in yet another country. Now, as Jones returns to Japan, the family story has come full circle, bringing them back to Hiroko’s roots.

Eddie Jones: Tough and resilient

Jones is known for being a tough and resilient coach – qualities he believes he got from his mother Nell. At 94, Nell is still going strong in Sydney, but her early years weren’t easy. She was born in California to Japanese parents but was sent to an internment camp during World War II, after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. In fact, Nell and her family were sent to separate camps and for four years or so, she could not even see her father.

She ended up moving back to Japan with her parents before meeting Ted, an Australian soldier. She faced plenty of hardships in Japan including social prejudice as she was born in America, as explained by Jones in his autobiography titled ‘My Life and Rugby’. Eventually, she moved to Tasmania with Ted but not without going through further struggles.

Jones was raised in Sydney by Ted and Nell and he believes his mother’s toughness and resilience inspired him a lot.

How did Eddie Jones’ lose England job?

Jones’ time with England was filled with highs, but it came to an abrupt end in December 2022. Less than a year before the 2023 Rugby World Cup. After seven years in charge, in which Jones managed to win two Six Nations Championships, go on an 18-game winning streak, and a run to the 2019 World Cup final, his tenure was cut short after a disappointing year.

England struggled in 2022. They had won just five of their 12 Test matches while suffering six losses and a draw. With the World Cup fast approaching, the Rugby Football Union made the call to part ways with Jones. This left England searching for a new head coach right before their tournament opener against Argentina.

Despite his exit, Jones remained gracious and in an interview, he expressed pride in what they had achieved. “Many of the players and I will no doubt keep in touch, and I wish them all well in their future careers,” he said at the time.
