Sanjeev Bhaskar, the beloved actor from ITV’s hit series Unforgotten, has finally shed light on the mystery of his character’s backpack as the show triumphantly returns to television.
The 61-year-old actor has captivated audiences with his portrayal of DI Sunil Khan since the drama’s inception in 2015. He has also sparked curiosity among fans regarding the contents of his on-screen black bag.
During an appearance on ‘s The One Show on Friday (January 31), Sanjeev addressed the speculation and even some criticism from viewers who felt the backpack made his character look juvenile.
Speaking to hosts Ross Kemp and Clara Amfo, he revealed: “There was a lot of weird criticism that I got after the first series about why my character had a backpack- I just chose a bag that was practical.”
He added: “They kind of said, ‘he looks like a child, he doesn’t wear it properly.'”

In response to the feedback, Sanjeev requested a unique approach for subsequent seasons, explaining: “And so from the second series onwards, I asked the costume department to fill it with stuff, but don’t tell me what’s in it and I won’t look until the end of the day.”
The star divulged that the backpack often contains an array of random items, which at times included a photograph of his co-star Sinéad Keenan, who plays DCI Jessica James, and even a blow-up guitar, reports .
Unforgotten is making a comeback to ITV on February 9th at 9pm after a two-year break, with series six promising to stir fans’ emotions following the heartrending departure of DCI Cassie Stuart, played by Nicola Walker, whose character shockingly met her end in season four.

Commencing with a gripping premiere during series five, the mystery of a dismembered leg found in a chimney left fans glued to their screens. The episode isn’t without its raw moments, particularly the poignant interaction between DCI Jessica and Sunny, who are still grappling with Cassie’s devastating loss.

As Unforgotten returns, ITV has also lifted the curtain on an all-new crime series titled Protection, which will unfold over six compelling episodes.
