New Westminster police are urging parents to be cautious and alert after three separate cases of child sexual exploitation were reported in one week.

Parents and guardians are being reminded to discuss with their kids the dangers that come with sharing intimate information and photos online.
“Parents need to understand that when children are manipulated into sharing sexual images of themselves, it may be very difficult for children to seek help afterwards for fear of consequences,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver.
“It’s critical that parents and guardians stay informed about online risks and have ongoing conversations with their children about internet safety so children will reach out for help and report these crimes.”
Leaver said the three cases are believed to be separate and unconnected, but all reported within the same one-week period.
“Due to the nature of these investigations and that they involve child victims we won’t be sharing more details,” he said.
In Canada, one in 10 children are sexually victimized before the age of 18. According to cybertip.ca, more than 4.3 million child sexual exploitation reports were recorded between 2014 and 2020.
