Motorists have been told to always reverse into bays when stopping their vehicle with road users likely to benefit from and fuel savings.

Experts stress “will use up more fuel” than on the way in.

They suggested it was better to try to reverse a vehicle when the engine had been warmed up instead of seconds after it had fired.

The simple hack could prevent road users from unnecessarily burning up petrol and diesel from their tanks.

Motoring experts at mentioned the tip last Autumn with  by following the advice.

They said: “If you’re heading out to a car park, take the time to reverse into the space instead of simply cruising in with front bay parking.

“That’s because reversing out of a space will use up more fuel, and it’s better to do this manoeuvre with a warm engine.

“In other words, if you’re not confident with reverse parking but want to save on your fuel bill, now might be the time to get a little practice in so that reversing in becomes a habit.”

British motorists have appeared to agree with the tip as many road users confirmed wherever possible.

DON’T MISS [COMMENT]

One Express reader said: “I taught my kids always reverse into a space.

“Cars behind have to stop to allow you to do it then when coming out cars will allow you out as you are not reversing at them causing them to have to pull back stop early unexpectedly.

“Driving out it takes just moments to do.”

Reader @RGGM added: “I worked for an international company whose rule was to reverse park in any of their car parks that they had on their premises anywhere in the world.

“It was nothing to do with saving money but security. It is always safer to drive out of a parking slot than to reverse out. Something that I put into practice wherever I park. Makes sense.”

However, not everyone was convinced by the simple advice with one road user claiming it could be more difficult to fill a car with bags of shopping.

@tjoepstil added: “So you now cannot put your shopping in the boot, because you have reversed against a wall.”
