Luke Humphries made his feelings clear on Joe Cullen well before their clash. Humphries and Cullen were drawn together in the first round of the revamped tournament, which started on Thursday night.

The world No.1 produced an accomplished display to fend off the former runner-up, despite as he squandered three match darts for a straight-sets victory. The Rockstar managed to get as set on the board, but that only delayed who eventually wrapped up a 3-1 win.

The pair are good friends away from the oche, with Cool Hand calling the Yorkshire thrower the funniest player he knows on the PDC Tour. During a brutally honest interview with the which saw him lift the lid on his darting rivals, Humphries said: “There’s a few but, for me, it’s Joe Cullen, he’s really funny.

“He’s naturally funny. He’s doesn’t tell jokes, he’s just witty. His sense of humour is very funny. He just loves a laugh. Him and a guy called Arron Monk, who you might not have heard of. He’s on the tour. They’re very funny.

“If you put them both together, they just bounce off each other.” Humphries later added that Cullen was “good on a night out”. He was also asked to name the player with the biggest ego.

With little thought, he said: “Well, that’s easy, Michael van Gerwen. But he wears it well, it kind of suits him in a weird way.” He added: “I’m good friends with him as well, he’s a really nice guy.”

The question about the most intellectual player required more thought. He said with a smile: “There’s not many to pick from, I must admit! I’ve got one, James Wade, he’s very smart. Very intellectually smart but he’s also got a good head on his shoulders.

“He’s invested in things really well. I get on really well with James, we speak a lot. He knows a lot. If you want to know something, he usually knows.”

The first-round action will draw to a close on Friday as world champion and five-time Masters winner Van Gerwen open their title bids at Arena MK. Scottish icon Gary Anderson will also headline Friday’s play, with duo Chris Dobey and Nathan Aspinall among the stars in action.
