A canine behaviourist discussed the three breeds of dog he himself would never own.

Will Atherton is a leading canine behaviourist who specialises in extreme behaviour modification.

The expert has worked with countless dog breeds over the years as a trainer.

Taking to his YouTube channel , he said: “Having the ability to work with so many different breeds lets me have a really good understanding of what would be a perfect breed that I would love to own and what would probably be a terrible choice.”

Atherton added that “there is only one dog breed, only one, where I thought ‘if you try to kill me right now, I’m not 100% sure that I would be able to stop you’” – the Caucasian shepherd.

“They are one of the most intensely beautiful, regal, powerful dog breeds in the world and they are also insane guardians,” Atherton explained.

“When you see them working out in the remote locations, keeping their flocks safe from extreme predators like bears or wolves, it’s truly a beautiful thing to behold but for me, that is not a breed that does not belong in a family”.

He then mentioned the Siberian Husky he claimed is “a breed that does not gel or vibe with my system of training at all”.

He further explained: “I believe Siberian huskies should be in arctic conditions, running for hours and hours every single day and if they don’t’ get that – I truly believe that they’re just not that happy and there is not that much joy and fulfilment that they can bring into people’s lives”.

Atherton added that he is aware there are countless husky owners in the UK who will more than likely disagree with his comments, but his experience in dog training and also owning a husky himself has meant he looks at them differently now.

“If you were to compare a Siberian husky and their level of joy, reward, bond compared to a labrador retriever, they’re opposite ends,” Atherton added.

As for the third dog breed Atherton would never own and would recommend against making it your next family dog, he mentioned the Cocker or Springer Spaniels.

His reason for this comes down to these dog breeds energy, which is ideal when it comes to outdoor sporting activities, including field work, but it’s often difficult for this behaviour to transport to calmness in the home.

He further explained that the kind of energy a Spaniel brings is far from serene, making them a dog breed not fit for the family home.
