B.C. dump truck driver issued 10 violation tickets after crash

Police said the truck was overloaded, had poor brakes, and should not have been on the road.

Burnaby police have slapped a dump truck driver with 10 violation tickets after his out-of-control vehicle crashed into a lamp post and hydro pole in Burnaby.

No one was injured in the Jan. 13 collision on Boundary Road near Myrtle Street, but the impact of the crash knocked the poles over and affected traffic and a nearby train track for several hours.

RCMP said the truck was overloaded, had poor brakes, and should not have been on the road.

“Our investigators believe that a proper pre-trip inspection could have caught several defects that may have prevented this collision,” said Burnaby RCMP spokesman Cpl. Mike Kalanj in a statement. “We are extremely lucky that nobody was hurt as a result of this incident, as the truck was travelling downhill with ineffective brakes.”

The violations included failing to ensure the vehicle was in safe operating condition, failing to comply with trip inspection requirements, and exceeding the axle weight of the truck and trailer.

Last year, Lower Mainland authorities conducted 52 commercial vehicle enforcement checks in the region, with 2,409 trucks inspected. Of these, more than half were placed “out of service” and 5,774 violation tickets were issued.

Burnaby RCMP also conducted its own enforcement in the municipality and found 61 per cent, or 827 out of 1,352 inspected trucks, had to be pulled off the road.
