WXCharts maps, generated using the Metdesk data on January 29, suggest that the freezing conditions may hit some of the areas on February 10, with the temperature levels plummeting to -5C.

According to the weather maps, around 10cm per hour of snow is likely to fall on areas around Inverness and Portree.

However, the lowest temperature levels could be experienced in areas around Cardiff and Birmingham, with mercury levels oscillating between -5C and -4C, as the maps suggest.

The cold snap comes days after the issued several multi-hazard warnings of snow, ice, rain and wind for most parts of the country.

The ’s long-range forecast between February 3 and 12 suggests: “Periods of wet weather are likely to affect northwestern parts of the UK at times, particularly early in this period.

“Some heavy rain is possible and this is likely to be accompanied by spells of strong winds. South of this, across the rest of the UK, it is likely to be more settled and whilst some rain can’t be ruled out at times, there is likely to be plenty of dry weather through this period.

“Winds will be lighter and this will bring the risk of overnight frost and fog. Overall, temperatures will be close to normal for most, but it is likely to be mild at times in the northwest.

“Brief colder spells are likely here in between weather systems though.”
