The UK has an “abundance” of one key ingredient for snowfall this February, according to one of the country’s top forecasters.

Freezing temperatures are essential for precipitation to fall as snow and not rain and the UK is in for baltic conditions next month, according to meteorologist Jim Dale.

“From what I can see right now… one necessary ingredient will be there in abundance – and that’s cold”, the British Weather Services boss told .

Large parts of the country could be hit by a -3C deep freeze on February 8, according to online forecaster WX Charts.

However, Mr Dale said that despite the frosty outlook, that did not mean snow was guaranteed. In fact, he said, that the UK was likely to lack the other main ingredient for snow: precipitation.

“As with the cold comes a lack of precipitation”, he said. Instead, Brits should expect “sunshine and fog”.

The weather guru didn’t rule out a dusting at some stage in Feburary, though.

“It may well get a little more interesting later [in the] month when the Atlantic systems try to roll back in”, he said.

Nevertheless, he did express caution, saying that any snowfall would be fleeting as the UK slowly edges towards warmer weather.

“I’d expect any snow events to be transient”, he said. “We are only 30 days away from meteorological spring”.
