Compared to the outgoing model, expect more power, more range, more features
- BMW has introduced the new iX all-electric SUV, with enhancements over the outgoing model
- The M60 is replaced with the M70, adding 40 horsepower and up to 811 lb-ft of torque
- Pricing will range from $88,900 to $129,000 when it goes on sale in Canada later this year
As before it will be offered in three variants, all built in BMW’s factory in Dingolfing, Germany, starting with the iX xDrive45 with 402 horsepower and an estimated range of up to 502 kilometres. The iX xDrive60 increases that to 536 horsepower, a rise of 20 horsepower over the current model, and an approximate range of up to 547 km, and will start at $94,900. Both have an electronically-limited top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph).
At the top end, the iX M70 xDrive replaces the M60 xDrive with 650 horsepower – 40 more than before – and up to 811 lb-ft of torque in launch mode. It has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) with performance tires; 0-to-100 km/h acceleration in 3.8 seconds; an estimated range of 486 km; unique M-specific design cues; and a tag beginning at $129,000. It also includes a two-axle adaptive air suspension and active four-wheel steering, which will be optional on the two lower trims.
Styling changes include redesigned headlights, new front and rear aprons, and a redesigned grille that offers optional contour lighting on the two lower trims, and standard on the M70. For the first time, an M Sport styling package with new M alloy wheels will be available on the iX. An available M Sport Pro Package adds a unique grille, red brake calipers, and darkened headlights and taillights – and both those packages will be included on the M70, along with a different grille unique to it.
The iX’s new wheels range from 20 to 23 inches, and the 21- and 22-inchers will be made with 70% recycled aluminum (for the record, that metal is almost infinitely recyclable without any quality issues).
Inside, the iX offers new available M multifunction seats, and microfibre and faux-leather upholstery or natural leather. The M Sport Package adds an M-style steering wheel and pedals, two-tone instrument panel, and leather upholstery. Other standard or optional features, depending on the trim, include a panoramic sunroof with electrochromic glass, heated rear seats and armrests, Bowers & Wilkins premium stereo, and a trailer hitch – the iX can tow up to 3,500 lbs. A Highway Assistant feature allows hands-free driving on appropriate limited-access highways, and a Parking Assistant Professional feature allows owners to park the vehicle remotely using a smartphone app.
BMW said it expects the new iX, depending on the model, to have about 10% more range than the outgoing version; and that the main reason is the company’s first-ever use of silicon carbide semiconductor components, which increase the efficiency of energy conversion in the drivetrain versus conventional silicon and produces peak performance in the electric motors.
The batteries are also improved with higher density – the iX xDrive45’s battery has a net usable energy of 100.1 kWh, while the other two models are between 112.8 and 113.4 kWh of net usable energy. Selectable regenerative braking can be set to high, medium, or low; and a Max Range function limits power, maximum speed and some comfort functions to increase the remaining range by up to 25% if needed. Maximum fast-charging is 175 kW on the “45,” and 195 kW on the “60” and M70.
