We tried Leon’s new menu – it was cheap, quick and surprisingly filling

has 152 UK restaurants serving a colourful menu inspired by cuisine.

The fast-food chain focuses on the rich flavours and natural healthiness of Mediterranean cooking and celebrates the natural rhythms of nature, so the menu changes across the seasons.

It is not as dominant as global giants like McDonald’s, Burger King, and KFC but stands out for its health focus. And that’s exactly what made it a tempting midweek treat in what many of us view as the healthiest month of the year – January.

Thanks to the restaurant’s app, you can order from Leon in advance, skip the queue, and swiftly pick up your order at your chosen time.

There is plenty to choose from, with wraps, burgers, salad bowls, rice boxes, and pots on the all-day menu. You can even build your own ‘super bowl’, a new addition to the Leon lineup.

We sampled a range of new items on the menu, including the Herby Falafel Wrap, Korean BBQ Pork rice box and the Chicken Caesar Salad.

As with all restaurant items, they never look quite as vibrant as the enticing images shown online, but Leon gets a solid score for presentation.

Regarding taste, the falafel wrap (£5.99) earned a four out of five rating. The falafel is stuffed into the iconic thick Leon wraps and paired with creamy Golden Goddess sauce, LEON Chilli Sauce, fresh herbs, crispy onions, roasted peppers, and pickles.

Suggested improvements for the herby wrap were that the bread could have been softer and the wrap bigger.

It may not satisfy your hunger, but you can make it a meal by adding a side and a drink for a small fee. It costs just £9.48 when paired with Leon’s trademark waffle fries and a soft drink, and it got full marks for being filling when enjoyed this way.

The Korean BBQ Pork rice box (£7.99) was a delicious item, but it can be purchased with a side and drink for around £11 – a true bargain.

With a sticky, sweet sauce and a generous portion of pork, the overall flavour was one I’d indulge in again. And the pickles were a nice touch. Enjoying it as a meal negated the need to rush around making dinner that evening, too, so it earned full satiating marks.

However, it is one of few items in the rice box and salad bowl lineup that doesn’t contain nuts or chickpeas, making them a limited option for allergy sufferers.

The Caesar Salad was fresh and flavoursome and received a solid three out of five stars, but the presentation lacked, with the colours appearing duller than advertised. The dressing was the dish’s highlight, and the overall taste was pleasant. It was also surprisingly filling.
