The broadcaster said the detective described the alleged attack as “confronting” and “quite abhorrent”. He said: “Anything involving a traumatic injury and the death of a child, which in the circumstances like this occurred, is quite abhorrent.

“No child should be subjected to anything that obviously leads to this sort of outcome from them.”

An autopsy is expected to be completed later this week and the property where Thai-li was found set to remain a crime scene until the results are in.

Det Snr Sgt Miles said police previously had “very brief interactions” with Thai-li, but the boy hadn’t come to their attention for any “offending behaviour”.

Meanwhile, soft toys and notes have been left outside the crime scene in tribute to Thai-li. One read: “You [were] so polite and humble”.

Ms Karkadoo was remanded in custody and her case was adjourned until April 23.
