Kia is recalling 80,255 examples of its 2023 through 2025 Niro SUV in Canada and the United States due to a potential wiring issue that may impact the functionality of the airbags and seat-belts, according to documents submitted to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall affects the Kia Niro, Niro EV, and Niro Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) models.
The automaker says the floor wiring assembly beneath the front passenger seat may become damaged over time, and that this damage could prevent the front airbags and seat-belts from functioning correctly in a collision, or could result in an unintended side-curtain airbag deployment. The NHTSA warns such malfunctions could increase the risk of injury.
Kia first identified the issue in November 2024. According to the company, no injuries have been reported linked to this defect in vehicles equipped with power-adjustable or manual front passenger seats.
To address the issue, Kia dealers will inspect, replace, and reroute the affected wiring assembly free of charge. They will also install protective wiring covers to prevent further damage. Owner notification letters will be sent beginning March 14, 2025. For further information, affected owners can contact Kia’s customer service.
We’ve contacted Kia Canada for comments and will update the story when we hear back.
