Grout can easily become crusty and brown if not cleaned regularly (Image: Getty)
Nobody enjoys spending ages having to scrub at a dirty surface, which is why it is so important to know the best way to clean grout with two time-saving products.
Grout is the white lining between tiles and is made of porous material, meaning it will easily absorb dirt, food splatters and soap to become a brown crusty colour if not regularly.
Tile grout needs to be steeped or wiped down as not only does it attract but it traps moisture and will eventually become if you ignore it.
Getting grout white again is simple, according to Erin, an expert and founder of who has shared that the best items to clean it with are baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
Erin said: “I have made a lot of cleaning recipes over the years, and I can honestly say this DIY Grout Cleaner is one of my favourites. The results are truly incredible!

“I am not kidding when I say it works like magic. My grout went from dirty brown to “like new” status with just a little scrubbing.”
Baking soda is naturally abrasive and absorbent, which means it will pull stains from grout to help get it clean again.
Hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant which means it will kill bacteria and mould but it will also brighten surfaces so it will quickly whiten discoloured grout.
How to clean and whiten dirty tile grout
Begin by pouring 110g of baking soda into a basin. This is enough to clean a small area like above a stove, but if you are cleaning a larger area such as a bathroom or a floor, you may need more.
Then, pour in a little hydrogen peroxide and mix it until it forms a paste. If it becomes a liquid then simply stir in more baking soda. You want consistency that will sit on a toothbrush or brush and not run off.

Start cleaning by simply placing a bit of the paste on an old toothbrush or other bristled brush and scrubbing it into the grout.
You should see a change almost immediately, and the dirt should come away in one or two swipes.
Once you have cleaned the grout, go over it with a wet sponge and then dry it with a clean cloth to get rid of any baking soda residue.
The grout should now be sparkling white and mould-free. Make sure to dispose of the cleaning solution as it usually only works when made fresh.
Erin said: “This needs to be made and used right away. Hydrogen peroxide loses its effectiveness when exposed to light for too long (which is why it’s stored in a dark bottle).”
Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide mixed together can also pressurise over time so it is more likely to leak if stored.
