Kelowna bridge reopened after bomb squad clears parked vehicle

Kelowna RCMP say the man is believed to have started a small fire inside the vehicle before officers were able to arrest him.

A Kelowna bridge has reopened after being closed for nearly 11 hours on Monday.

Police said the William R. Bennett Bridge, which connects Kelowna to West Kelowna, was closed at about 3:45 a.m. Monday because “an individual in crisis” had parked in the eastbound lanes.

Kelowna RCMP said the man is believed to have started a small fire in the vehicle before officers were able to arrest him.

An explosives disposal team examined the vehicle and it was determined to be safe for removal. The vehicle was towed around 2:18 p.m., and the bridge reopened.

Police have not said what type of vehicle it was or what was found inside.

“This investigation remains ongoing and no further details will be provided at this time,” said Cpl. Michael Gauthier.

“I’d like to acknowledge and thank all of our partner agencies for coming together and working through this incident. Thank you especially to the public for understanding and remaining patient while this matter was resolved safely.”
