on hundreds of UK roads will increase by 50%.

Welsh routes with 20mph limits will revert to 30mph after a U-turn on the country’s controversial bid to slow cars down.

The move could cost taxpayers millions of pounds, with Wrexham and councils asking the Welsh Government for £368,000 and £470,000 respectively to implement the new speed limits, according to .

Labour’s Ken Skates said mistakes were made in the original 20mph rollout. He estimated that changing hundreds of roads back to 30mph would cost over £5million.

“Officers engaged with local members and community/town/city councils in late 2024 regarding the remaining sites. This collaborative approach is a crucial part of identifying the most appropriate speed limit for locations, ensuring that local representatives’ voices are heard and considered.

“Consideration is currently being given to the feedback received before deciding on the locations which will move forward to a statutory TRO process. We expect this phase to get under way later this year.”
