This is when cruise lines typically offer their most attractive deals, such as discounted fares or perks like free excursions or drinks packages.

Elaine said: “My family once booked a Mediterranean cruise during wave season and got a great deal on kids’ excursions.

“It made the trip even more enjoyable for everyone.”

For those planning to travel during busy times like summer holidays or festive periods, she recommends booking six months to a year in advance.

She said: “You’ll have more options for rooms, like a balcony cabin where you can watch the sunrise over the water.”

If you’re more flexible with your dates, cruising during less busy months, such as April or September, can lead to even better savings. And for those who love a bit of spontaneity, last-minute deals can sometimes deliver significant discounts.

For example, Elaine recalled a memorable family trip to Alaska, where they saved enough by booking during wave season to upgrade to a suite with breathtaking views of glaciers.

She added: “We packed light but brought essentials like binoculars for the kids to spot wildlife from the deck and layers of clothing to stay warm.”

Elaine’s advice isn’t just about when to book but also how to prepare. Elaine encourages families to pack only what’s necessary to avoid extra luggage and make room for souvenirs.

She said: “Cruising is one of the best ways for families to travel, but a little planning can make it even better. Book at the right time, pack smart, and leave behind anything unnecessary.”
