Gorilla message

Garnacho sparked controversy in 2023 when he used gorilla emojis in a social media post celebrating Andre Onana’s penalty save in a Champions League game against Copenhagen.

He posted a picture of himself celebrating with the Red Devils goalkeeper and captioned it with the emojis, prompting the FA to ask him for an explanation.The governing body later said that he would not be charged, while Onana himself issued a staunch defence of his team-mate.

: “People cannot choose what I should be offended by. I know exactly what [Garnacho] meant: power and strength. This matter should go no further.”

Liking social media posts

Another social media storm erupted last season when Garnacho appeared to like posts which were critical of former United boss .

The posts in question were liked by Garnacho’s account after he was hooked at half-time in a game against Bournemouth. One post said that he ‘had a poor first half, but taking him off at half-time and holding him up as the problem is a joke’.

Ten Hag later revealed the winger had apologised for liking the posts, saying: “Alejandro is a young player, he has to learn a lot. He apologised for it and after that we move on.”

Excluded due to lateness

In the summer of 2022, Garnacho was reportedly dropped by Ten Hag as a form of punishment for being late to team meetings.

He travelled with his team-mates for a tour of Bangkok and Australia but did not play in any of United’s four matches as a consequence of his lateness, according to the .

Garnacho returned to the side for United’s final pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford, with the issue having been resolved behind closed doors.

Clashing with a United fan

Back in November, a bizarre clash with a heckling fan went viral on social media ahead of United’s game against PAOK in the Europa League.

Garnacho was signing autographs and posing for pictures outside Old Trafford before kick-off when he was approached by the fan, who said: “Pass better today, score a goal and work on your first touch as well, yeah?”

Before walking away, Garnacho snapped back: “Why are you not playing, man?” The supporter continued to speak even after the forward had left the scene, commenting: “Well, he did not like that.”
