star Riccardo Calafiori has revealed that Myles Lewis-Skelly was ‘disappointed’ after receiving a harsh red card against Wolves. Calafiori struck the winner in a narrow 1-0 victory for the Gunners after Lewis-Skelly was dismissed for the first time in his career.

The teenager caught Matt Doherty on the ankle as Wolves counter-attacked two minutes before half-time. Many were expecting referee Michael Oliver to show him a yellow card for preventing the attack.

However, Lewis-Skelly was left stunned as a red card was brandished in his direction. VAR upheld the decision and the 18-year-old became the fourth player to be sent off in the this season.

Calafiori said: “From the bench, it was clearly not a red card. I saw him at half-time and he was so disappointed for the team. But in the end we won, so nothing happened. He is a good footballer and a good guy, so we help him a lot.”

The Italian defender struck in the 74th minute after coming off the bench. Wolves had been reduced to 10 men four minutes earlier, with Joao Gomes shown a second yellow card. The midfielder had previously been fortunate to avoid being dismissed earlier in the half.

It is the first time that have gone on to win after having a player sent off. Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and William Saliba have all seen red this season, with those matches resulting in two draws and a defeat.

boss said he was “absolutely fuming” with Oliver’s decision but that he will leave it up to the club to conclude whether they want to appeal.

The Spaniard said: “It is that clear that I leave it to you guys. I am absolutely fuming but I leave it with you. Because it is that obvious. I don’t think my words are going to help.

“It’s incredible what the boys did again. In the context that we were thrown in again, it was about character, personality of the team, courage and intelligence to play the game we wanted to play. It was exceptional.”

Asked if will appeal against the decision to send off Lewis-Skelly, Arteta said: “That’s for the club to decide what the best decision is. I think it’s that obvious, maybe we don’t even need to.”

A win in a tight game means remain six points off leaders , who beat Ipswich 4-1. The Reds have a game in hand.
