Joao Fonseca receives £40k bonus payment after banking £102k at Australian Open

Teenage sensation has been awarded an extra £40,000 after his breakout run at the .

The 18-year-old came through qualifying to make his first Grand Slam main draw appearance and

Fonseca pocketed just under £102,000 for his efforts in Melbourne Park, and the Brazilian has now been picked to receive a huge financial grant.

Fonseca is one of two players who received £40k in a grant from the Grand Slam Player Development Programme, backed by the ITF and the four Major tournaments.

Xinran Sun of China has also received top financial support.

The Grand Slam Player Development Programme aims to improve the opportunities for players from “developing tennis nations and regions” to compete on the world stage.

A further 45 players will receive a £20k grant, while nine others are set to get a £10k boost.

Grand Slam Player Grants were introduced in 2017 to help players gain international competitive experience. The four Major tournaments contribute to the fund.

Former champion and ATP No. 6 Casper Ruud are among the previous recipients of the grant. Rising Chinese star Jerry Shang was also awarded funds last year, and he went on to break into the world’s top 50.

The £40k cash injection will be valuable for Fonseca, who is set to break into the world’s top 100 on Monday following his efforts at the .

His new ranking will allow him to enter bigger tournaments, including the other Grand Slams and some Masters 1000s, and the teenager will need to pay for travel and accommodation for himself and his travelling team.

On top of his £100k prize cheque, Fonseca earned an eye-watering sum when he won the Next Gen ATP Finals in Saudi Arabia at the end of 2024.

As an undefeated champion, the Brazilian banked £424k for winning the aged 20-and-under event. Fonseca joined the likes of and in the list of tournament champions.

The current world No. 112 has also signed some huge brand deals. He signed with clothing sponsor On in 2023 and is a Rolex Testimonee ambassador.

Aged just 18, Fonseca is already making waves both on and off the court. Both and Alcaraz , and he will now embark on his first full season as a tennis professional.
