Power cuts warning issued with -6C freeze to hammer UK – areas affected

Brits have been warned of power cuts as batters and Ireland.

Outages have hit around 10,000 people in Ayrshire, East Lothian, Falkirk, the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway, SP Energy Networks reports.

SSEN has said that it had increased their response teams to “10 times the usual levels”.

It comes as 170,000 vulnerable customers were sent text messages containing advice as to how they could prepare for hostile conditions.

In parts of the Borders, customers were warned of power cuts shortly before 8am, and told that faults were unlikely to be repaired until around 11.45pm today, the reports.

Difficult conditions are not set to relent for some areas of the country, as weather maps have forecast below freezing temperatures at the weekend.

Minus temperatures are due to affect parts of north and mid-Wales, a map generated by WXchart suggests, and freeze could stretch to as far south as Brecon on Sunday.

Areas like Prestatyn, Llandudno and Angelsey look set to swerve the lowest temperatures in the map generated on Friday but looking at Sunday’s temperatures.

Almost all of Northern Ireland is covered in foreboding light blue.

The Scottish Highlands near Ben Nevis are set to be the coldest areas, as dark blue indicates the lowest sub-zero temperatures forecasted to reach -6C. Almost all of the country is covered in at least light blue, excluding parts of the east, northeast, and west coasts.

Northern England, down to just above Manchester also look to be bitterly cold on Sunday, but the east and west coasts look set to escape the chilliest temperatures.

Yellow weather warnings have been issued by the for Sunday. One for wind (8am until 3pm) covers the south west of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

An alert for rain (8am Sunday until 6am Monday) includes most of Wales, the south west, south, parts of the south east and the Midlands of England.

The rain warning includes “a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses”, and winds means “some short term loss of power and other services is possible”.
