Chief Chip Technician Dan Lynes inspects the world’s first square Doritos
Doritos has shocked snack lovers by unveiling a square version of its iconic triangular chip for the first time ever.
The quirky shape change is to celebrate a partnership with the much-anticipated A Minecraft Movie, and these square chips will be available in the UK for a fleeting moment.
Originally an accidental creation at Disneyland, California, in the 1960s, Doritos made a splash on British shores in 1994, offering a variety of flavours like Tangy Cheese and Cool Original. However, this limited-edition twist will see only 100 packets containing the square-shaped Chilli Heatwave A Minecraft Movie Doritos, and those lucky enough to find one could bag a whopping £10k cash prize.

This follows a mysterious ad campaign hinting at the new shape with the tagline ‘The shape of things to come’, sparking weeks of speculation and playful banter from other brands flaunting their own unique shapes.
Amidst pleas from fans not to alter the beloved triangle, Doritos spokesperson Alex Nicholas said: “We’ve always been famous for being triangular – until recently, square Doritos were unheard of.”
He added, “But it’s happening and finding one of them unlocks huge prizes.”

For those who don’t discover a square chip, there’s still hope – by scanning a QR code on promotional packs, they might reveal a digital square Dorito and another shot at winning.
Alex Nicholas from Doritos, which is also launching two audacious new Minecraft-inspired flavours – The Creeper Vinegar and The Ghast barbecue – added: “We know our triangle-shape is iconic, so changing it had to be for something special.”
