The strongest storm in generations is predicted to hit the UK as looks set to crash into the UK with winds of up to 100mph.

Taking to X @Carlow Weather advised people “to take care” and to check in on the elderly ahead of the storm and after.

The full tweet read: “The UK high resolution model is showing some of the strongest gusts forecast. We are looking at a historic storm tonight and tomorrow with a lot of impacts.

“Please take care and prepare for power outages, charge all your battery devices and if you have a private water supply filling a bath of water can be a good idea.

“Please also check in elderly and vulnerable family and neighbours ahead of the storm and after it passes.”

The National Emergency Coordination Group has also warned of will cause as it prepares to batter the country with harsh winds.

It said: “A Status Red severe weather warning means ‘shelter in place’. People in the areas affected by Red warnings should stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel and and their properties.

“Schools, early learning and childcares settings and further and higher education institutions in red level warning areas will close for the duration of the Red warning. Widespread disruption to public and other services is to be anticipated.”
