GB News’ Mark White breaks down in tears as he struggles through Southport update

A reporter could be heard fighting back sobs of emotion as he reported on the sentencing of Southport killer Axel Rudakubana. He is being sentenced for the murder of last July, and the attempted murder of 10 other people.

News presenter Mark White started to explain what had been heard in court as he said: “Leanne Lucas [] has said in her statement ‘how can I live knowing’…” But then the news reader struggled to get his words out as he broke down with emotion. 

While the screen showed the outside of , Mark could be heard choking up. He sniffed a few times, before a sob escaped and he coughed to try and regain composure. 

Back in the studio, Tom Harwood and Emily Carver became concerned as they asked if he was ok. Mark tried his best to continue, but he was lost for words as the camera panned back to him stood in the rain, holding an umbrella and physically fighting back tears.

Tom said to him: “Mark, if you need a moment, do take a moment.” But he just explained why he was so upset, saying: “I’m fine, I’m fine.

“To hear her, an adult, trying to come to terms with the enormity of what happened on that day and to be so full of guilt themselves because they survived and young children died… it’s awful.”

He added: “She should feel anything but guilt,” as he blinked back tears once more and fell back into silence. Back in the studio, Emily said she “can’t imagine” what the dance instructor had been through as her voice also wobbled.

Class instructor Leanne Lucas, 36, who was injured by Axel Rudakubana in the Southport knife attack, said: “I cannot give myself compassion or accept praise, as how can I live knowing I survived when children died.”

She added: “He targeted us because we were women and girls, vulnerable and easy prey. For (the girls) I’m surviving for you.”

He was charged with three counts of murder, 10 of attempted murder for those he injured, and additional charges of , the poison ricin and an al-Qaida manual. He unexpectedly changed his plea to guilty on all charges on Monday.
