The humble air fryer has become a kitchen sensation, gaining a firm place on many kitchen countertops, but the greasy aftermath is often a nightmare to scrub off, leading to hours of . However, one cheap and common household item lurking in the back of your cupboard may be able to save you several hours of pain.

One woman took to Army Cleaning Tips asking for advice on how to tackle her greasy air fryer. Debbie Meany pleaded: “Can anyone recommend a product to clean my Ninja ?”

She had already tried many of the common, expensive cleaners and shared her failed attempts: “It’s got lots of stuck-on sticky grease and no matter what I try it won’t come off, I have tried Elbow Grease, Pink Stuff, bleach etc.”

The cleaning army was soon to responsd with several Hinching enthusiasts favouring an unexpected hero – washing powder.

Tracey Anne suggested: “Try soaking in biological washing powder and boiling water. The enzymes in the powder break down the grease. Make sure you rinse really well though.”

Fellow member Cassie Ross endorsed this method: “Hot water straight from the kettle and a bit of washing powder. I swear by it. Mine looked just like that.”

Karen Macfarlane recounted her own success away from commercial degreasers: “Elbow Grease wouldn’t remove the grease on my air fryer, but the cheap laundry powder from Asda did.”

Meanwhile, Adele Roons offered her go-to remedy: “I asked the same a while back. My fave is putting washing powder in and pouring hot water on it. Leave to soak and clean.”

A 1kg tub of washing powder will set you back just £3 in most supermarkets with the cleaning tip only requiring one scoop, leaving plenty to go around.

If you prefer liquid detergent, another quick tip you can use to keep your air fryer sparkling is simply using a dishwasher tablet soaked in hot water as a potent cleaning alternative.

Cara Sidwell suggested: “Dishwasher tablet with boiling hot water, leave to soak then scrub with washing up liquid.”

Zoe Mitchell shared her method: “I pop a dishwasher tablet into mine! Leave a few minutes then wipe it away, comes off straight away.”

Leanne Blair offered her advice: “I put a dishwasher tablet in the basket, fill it with water (not too much or it will bubble over), then turn it on for 20 minutes.”

She added, “If it still has stubborn bits soak it overnight with washing up liquid. It’s the only thing I have found that works.”
