What’s the best way to get to/from Rogers Arena?

Rogers Arena is about 37 minutes away from Vancouver International Airport via Canada Line, and 45 minutes from Surrey City Centre via the Expo Line.

If driving is preferred, there is ample parking throughout the Crosstown/Stadium district. Pay parking for events is typically in effect, so expect increased rates around live event dates.

The Vancouver Grizzlies competed in the National Basketball Association (NBA) Midwest Division team in the Western Conference. Following the 2001 season, the team relocated to Memphis, Tenn., where it still resides as the Memphis Grizzlies.

27th Juno Awards Ceremony

When: March 22, 1998

Vancouver actor Jason Priestley hosted the 27th Juno Awards at GM Place. Vancouver rap crew the Rascalz was nominated for best rap recording but explicitly declined the award on the basis that racism played a part in the rap award not being presented during the main ceremony. The Junos moved the category to the main ceremony in 1999.

When: Oct. 6, 2002

Accompanied by hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, the late Queen dropped the puck during a ceremonial face off at centre ice before an NHL pre-season game between the Vancouver Canucks and the San Jose Sharks. There is no reporting on whether Her Majesty was amused or not by the traditional greeting of players loudly banging their sticks on the ice.

38th Juno Awards Ceremony

When: March 29, 2009

Comedian Russell Peters hosted the event, which included a big Bhangra moment foreshadowing Surrey’s globe-trotting Punjabi music scene of the 2020s. Local band Loverboy was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and singer Sarah McLachlan won the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award.

When: April 9, 2009

It was only 30 minutes into what was a pretty great performance by Spears on her Circus tour when the singer left the stage suddenly. Citing the copious amounts of smoke from various combustibles leading to stage members taking ill from a ventilation issue, Spears returned to finish the truncated show telling the crowd “don’t smoke weed.”

2010 Winter Olympic Gold Medal Hockey Finals

When: Women, Feb. 25 and Men, Feb. 28

Canada took home gold times two at the 2010 Winter Olympic hockey tournaments. The Canadian women’s team beat the U.S.A. 2-0. This was followed by the Canadian men’s team beating the U.S.A. 3-2 with a game-winning overtime goal by Sidney Crosby.

2011 Stanley Cup Finals and riot

When: June 2011

Vancouver Canucks fans were hopeful that the team would emerge as winners when they faced off against the Boston Bruins in the 2011 Stanley Cup finals. Coming down to the wire on Game 7, the team failed to carry the series and lost. Fans and others in the taking in the game outside the arena responded by rioting, setting police cars on fire and looting. To this day, large public gatherings are rare and heavily policed in town.
