Severance fans uncover ‘obvious’ clue that proves one of season 2’s most popular theories

The Apple TV+ sci-fi drama, Severance, is back on our screens after a nearly three-year hiatus following its jaw-dropping season finale.

The Macrodata Refinement team have made their return to Lumon Industries with a plan to awaken their ‘Innies’ in the outside world, but it’s clear that things are not as they once were.

Mark S (played by Adam Scott) initially storms back into the office only to find his colleagues Dylan G (Zach Cherry), Irving B (John Turturro) and Helly R (Britt Lower) have been replaced.

However, this new team dynamic doesn’t last long as Mark insists that his newly promoted floor manager Mr Milchick (Tramell Tillman) reinstates his original team.

Once the quartet are finally back together, they share what they’ve learned about their ‘Outies” lives. However, Helly, who has discovered she’s actually Helena Eagan, the daughter of Lumon’s CEO, keeps this revelation to herself, claiming she simply woke up in a ‘boring apartment’, reports .

Fans have since been speculating whether Helly is truly her Innie or could actually be Helena posing as her Innie to spy on MDR.

One observant viewer has identified a crucial clue which could settle the debate once and for all.

“An Innie would never consider a regular apartment ‘boring’,” they suggested.

“One of the larger pieces of evidence that it’s Helena we see in S2E1 (IMO) is that she characterizes waking up in a ‘really f***ing boring apartment’. To an Innie, even the most mundane things about the outside world would be brand new, confusing, and exciting.

“This concept is emphasized in the episode through Gwendolyn Y (Alia Shawkat) asking iMark what the sky is like and what wind feels like – all things an Outie wouldn’t even think to remark upon, but to an Innie it is thrilling.”

As Innies typically have no idea what exactly the outside world is like, even the smallest of details would be novel to them when they woke up.

Suspicion has already been cast on Helly when Irving picked up on her obvious lie that she saw a gardener working outside her apartment, despite the fact it was the dead of night when they woke up as their Outies.

While it’s possibly Helly’s Innie is lying to keep her Outie’s connection to Lumon a secret, her exact phrasing has sent up a bright red flag for some viewers.

“Even if Helly were lying because she was embarrassed about being an Eagan or worried about the other refiners judging her, I have a hard time believing that an Innie would characterize anything about the Outie world as mundane or barely worth remarking upon,” the post went on.

“Recall that Irving woke up in what was ostensibly a ‘boring apartment’ and it was both overwhelming and disorienting for him because, as he mentions, ‘It’s not our world up there’.

“I think the writers don’t want to tip their hand too early and so we’re meant to be curious about whether it is Helly or Helena at this stage. I would bet we’re going to find out in the next episode or two.”

As one fan noted in the comments: “In season one they were speculating that earth might be destroyed and people live at sea, and in this episode the new team wanted to know what the sky looked like.”

A fellow viewer added: “Genuinely anything should seem interesting. They have no idea what is normal.”

Viewers are eagerly anticipating answers about Helly/Helena, which may come when Severance season two continues on Friday.
