Vitamins, minerals and supplements might seem like an easy way to boost your health without needing professional advice, but one doctor is sounding the alarm about a specific vitamin that could cause issues for your body if youare not careful.

Nutritionist Dr Carlos Andrés Zapata, who goes by the username Cazamed online, has gained a following for his straightforward, professional medical advice, as reported by . He has warned that Omega-3 supplements could pose a significant risk, especially if taken daily without medical supervision.

In a , the expert warned: “The risks of using omega-3 supplements chronically without proper medical advice.”

He cautioned people to “watch out” as he has noticed many people taking Omega-3 without first consulting their doctor.

:

He revealed: “Taking omega-3 supplements on a chronic basis without medical advice has been associated with two major risks: the first, without any doubt, is atrial fibrillation.”

This is an irregular heart rhythm that can lead to the formation of blood clots. An irregular heartbeat could send these blood clots to various parts of the body, leading to serious health issues such as strokes if they reach the brain. He added: “The second associated risk is increased bleeding.”

This can worsen problems caused by atrial fibrillation and heighten the danger of clot-related health complications.

He specifically cautioned those with a family history of heart disease, who might be more susceptible.

The doctor advised: “If you are taking omega-3 supplement pills on a long-term basis and your doctor hasn’t recommended it… think about whether you really need it and discuss it with your doctor.”

For those keen on boosting their omega-3 intake, he suggested opting for foods rich in the nutrient like salmon, mackerel, walnuts, chia seeds, and vegetable oils, which also contain beneficial fats for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.

He also stressed in his message: “These videos and messages are not intended, nor should they be taken as a medical indication that goes beyond that of your treating physician. Take note and discuss it with your specialist so that they can put it in your clinical context.”
