Lorraine Kelly has extended a touching tribute to Pauline Quirke following her health revelation as the Birds of a Feather actress announces her retirement after a 50-year career due to a dementia diagnosis.
On Tuesday’s (January 21) show, Lorraine expressed her “love” towards Pauline and her family, praising her for the “good” she’s done in raising awareness.
“This is really sad news this morning. Pauline Quirke, lovely Pauline, stepping down from acting after 50 years because she’s been diagnosed with dementia,” said Lorraine. “We just send all our love. She’s a brilliant woman, an absolute delight. I’ve met her many times and it’s just really sad. But she’ll be doing a lot of good, as she has in her whole life, and she’ll continue to do so.”
Her husband Steve Sheen confirmed the distressing news, stating: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my wife Pauline’s decision to step back from all professional and commercial duties due to her diagnosis of dementia in 2021.”
He lauded her inspirational contributions to film, TV, charity work, and her establishment of the successful Pauline Quirk Academy of Performing Arts (PQA).

Recognised for her role as Sharon Theodopolopodous on the One’s beloved sitcom Birds of a Feather, which aired from 1989 to 1998 and was revived by ITV between 2014 and 2020.
Pauline has left an indelible mark on British television and her career includes appearances in Carrie’s War, North and South, Casualty and Cold Blood.
