The 47th president of the US, , has signed over 200 executive orders on his first day back at the White House.

Executive orders carry the weight of law but can be overruled by subsequent presidents or the courts. They are written by the president to the federal government and do not require congressional approval.

Here are the headline executive orders made public after being signed on day 1:

Immigration

  • Declared a national emergency at the border.
  • Moved towards revoking automatic citizenship for US-born children of immigrants in the country illegally.
  • Suspend the US refugee resettlement programme for four months.
  • Closing the border – the military has been ordered to “seal the borders”.
  • Declared drug cartels and international gangs as foreign terrorist organisations.
  • Re-implemented his “Remain in Mexico” policy – returning non-Mexican asylum seekers across the border to await hearings.
  • Shut down CHNV, a major immigration initiative which allowed illegal border crossings.
  • Death penalty reinstated – this should be used on and includes any “capital crime committed by an alien illegally present in this country” and anyone convicted of murdering a law enforcement officer.
  • Ended the practice of “catch and release”, a policy that allows migrants to live in US communities while they await their hearings.

Diversity and gender 

  • Only two genders – Trump issued an executive order declaring that the US will only recognise “two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”
  • DEI – all government programmes, policies, statements and communications that promote or support gender ideology will end.
  • DEI—A separate executive order outlines the halting of all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programmes within the federal government.

TikTok

  • The Chinese-owned social media platform’s banning has been postponed. This allows ‘s parent company more time to find a US partner to buy a majority stake.

Government reform 

  • The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been created.
  • A freeze on federal hiring has been implemented – except within the US military and several other categories.
  • Federal workers must work in the office and not from home.
  • Political prosecutions – the “weaponization of government against political adversaries” will end.

World Health Organization (WHO)

  • The process of withdrawing the US from the WHO has begun.

Reversing Biden polices

  • America First – Foreign aid has been paused, and assistance programs will be reviewed.
  • Cuba – Cuba will be reinstated on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism as well as sanctions against Venezuela.
  • Biden-ear regulations – nearly 80 will be rescinded.
  • Regulatory freeze – Federal agencies cannot issue new regulations until the Trump administration has full control.
  • Unvaccinated federal workers – Trump revoked a mandate that federal workers must be vaccinated with the vaccine.

The Gulf of Mexico renamed 

  • It is now named the ‘Gulf of America’.
  • Alaska’s Mount Denali will also be renamed Mount McKinley.

Climate 

  • Withdrawal of the Paris Agreement – an international deal to limit rising global temperatures.
  • Trump declared a national energy emergency, promising to fill up strategic oil reserves with “drill, baby, drill.”
  • The Green New Deal has ended – a series of Biden administration measures to boost green jobs.

Capitol riot

  • Nearly 1,600 people who stormed the US Capitol in 2021 have been pardoned.
  • Sentences for members of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys have been commuted.
