However, iron sulphate would need to be mixed with water to have a “superb green-up effect on the grass”, and as long as plenty of moisture was available, it would also be very safe.

For an area of 100 metres squared, dissolve 60 to 250g of iron sulphate (depending on conditions and soil pH) in 100 litres of water.

To make the mixture more manageable, use a 10-litre watering can. Fill it with water and add six to 25g of iron sulphate.

Iron sulphate is most effective when applied under dry and windless conditions. Light watering will speed up absorption into the soil, but you can also spread when rain is expected, preferably not a downpour to avoid washing away.

According to the gardening experts at , iron sulphate “eliminates moss within four days” of application.

Give your lawn time to absorb the compound, and avoid treading on it for at least several weeks.

Keep in mind that iron sulphate can leave stains. Be careful with stones, concrete and paving, as stains can appear there too.
