Snow forecast as Britain facing 72 hours of ‘non-stop’ blizzards – list of areas affected

Wintry conditions are expected to continue throughout January, and  will descend in the UK at the end of the week.

The is predicted to approach the nation from the west as up to 5cm of flurries per hour are predicted.

Starting at midnight on Friday 24, patches of snow cover areas in the north of England and Scotland as heavy rainfall will blast the rest of the UK.

Around 3am, pressure south will push the snowfall towards the north of Scotland, where heavy showers can be seen.

As the blustery weather continues throughout the night, the rain showers will ease going into Saturday. The UK will see a brief dry interlude before another blanket of purple heads from the west.

At midnight on the 25, heavy snow showers of up to 5cm per hour will cover Belfast and northwest England. Heading into Sunday, snowfall will go down to Wales, stretching from north to south at midnight. Manchester and surrounding areas will also see light showers during the night.

Patches of snow will continue to fall on the UK through to Sunday evening as the swathes of purple pass over to the east. By 6pm on Sunday 26, the white stuff will be contained to Scotland. The rest of the UK will see dry but cold conditions by this time, however, the capital can expect heavy rainfall of up to 3cm per hour.

According to weather forecaster the , conditions this week will turn increasingly unsettled as wet and windy weather, accompanied by snowfall, arrives on Friday.

The forecaster predicts that the weekend will see a deep area of low pressure being steered towards the UK on a powerful Jet Stream – this is fuelled by the recent cold spell over North America.

Separately, the also shows snowfall to hit the UK on Saturday and Sunday with wet and windy conditions dominating. Interludes of rain and snow showers will be accompanied by strong winds, setting the tone for the start of February.

Their long-range weather forecast says there is the potential for weather warnings or even a named storm at some point over the next few weeks.

Temperatures this weekend will continue to plummet, and an icy feel is expected across the nation. Going into next week, figures should recover in most places to a little above average, though the elements will make it feel colder than it is.
