Grout is porous, which means it will easily absorb any dirt, grime, soap or even moisture that lands on it and will eventually turn into if it is not cleaned regularly.

However, rather than spending ages scrubbing between tiles with a toothbrush, it is much easier to use a homemade solution made with three simple items.

Kris Jarrett, a home improvement expert and founder of Driven by Decor, has experimented with many different ways to and has now discovered the best natural .

She said: “I tried several combinations, and the most effective was a combination of , hydrogen peroxide, and dish detergent.

“Baking soda is a mild abrasive, loosening dirt on your grout without scratching your tile. Hydrogen peroxide cleans and brightens, and the dish detergent removes any greasy grime.”

How does it work?

The trouble with cleaning grout is that it can be tricky to find a product that will deeply penetrate the grout surface to clean it thoroughly without damaging the material.

Baking soda and washing up liquid can get into the grout pores to remove dirt and remove any grime that has been building up. Hydrogen peroxide is a mild bleaching agent and disinfectant which will not only whiten grout but will kill any mould or bacteria.

This will work while still being gentle on the grout material. It is incredibly important to be careful when cleaning grout as you can easily ruin it if you use harsh products like chlorine bleach.

However, even natural cleaners like vinegar or lemon juice should not be used due to clean grout as the acid in these ingredients is too harsh.

Kris said: “Grout that’s unsealed or in poor shape shouldn’t be routinely cleaned with any highly acidic products or bleach because they can corrode your grout over time.

Don’t miss… [UPDATE]

“This includes toilet bowl cleaner (don’t believe Tik Tok – lol!), some commercial grout cleaners, and even white vinegar.”

How to whiten and brighten the grout between tiles

All you need to do is combine two parts baking soda and one part hydrogen peroxide with a few squirts of washing-up liquid in a small container.

Try to use less hydrogen peroxide than baking soda, as you are aiming for a thick paste-like formula which will stick to the grout surface.

Kris said: “I actually prefer to use a little less hydrogen peroxide than this formula so it’s not as liquidy, but instead has more of a toothpaste consistency that’s easy to apply and work into the grout lines.”

Once you have mixed the ingredients together, apply the paste to the grout lines on your tiles.

Leave it to sit for about five minutes to allow the solution to penetrate the grout. Then, use a brush to break up the dirt and grime, which should come away quickly.

Once the grout is clean, rinse the surface with a bucket of clean, warm water, then use a sponge to wipe any remaining paste off.

Your grout should now be completely clean, white, and mould-free without the need to use harsh chemical cleaners or spend a lot of money on expensive products.

Kris said: “Wow! I was actually so surprised by how well this baking soda paste method performed! It cleaned and brightened my grout just as much as the Zep cleaner did.”
