ITV fans ‘switch off’ Martin Clunes drama within minutes and issue same complaint

Fans who tuned into a new drama, Out There, starring Martin Clunes issued the same complaint as they threatened to “switch off” within minutes.

The series follows Martin playing the role of Nathan, a troubled father whose son gets involved in the world of county lines drug dealing at a young age.

Despite the premise showing plenty of promise, fans complained on social media about Martin’s Welsh accent, which he had to adopt for the ITV role as the show was set in rural Wales.

Plenty took to X to point out that his dialect wasn’t quite right. One shared: “As a Welsh person, this welsh accent is poor. Martin, you’re great but the accent is really off putting. I can’t watch it #OutThere.”

A second fan also typed: “Struggling with Martin having a Welsh accent in this already #outthere.”

A third also typed: “Oh my God. I thought it was Cornish for a minute and going right through me. I love him but he cannot do Welsh (probably the second worst I’ve seen) #OutThere.”

A fourth penned: “Really wanted to watch this but I’m not getting it so far & Martin’s attempt at a Welsh accent is grating #OutThere.”

However, many detailed that they thoroughly enjoyed the episode and praised the plot, with one commenting: “So far so good….#OutThere.”

The series was announced in September 2023 and will air six episodes over the next few weeks. The show is not based on real life events, however acclaimed screenwriter Ed Whitmore suggested that it ‘could be.’

According to ChronicleLive, he said: “County lines is a particularly vicious and ruthless wave of drug dealing that uses fear and violence to coerce, often vulnerable, young people into working as runners and dealers. It has become a serious and rapidly increasing problem across the whole of the UK, so it felt like an important and timely story to tell.”

Out There is now available to stream on ITV and ITVX.
