are the bane of any gardener’s life, especially when they invade , paving, and gravelled areas around homes.

These stubborn green invaders tend to flourish in stony or gravelly spots due to less competition, making them a real nuisance.

Unfortunately, despite the cold weather, weeds can thrive through any season; if left unchecked, they can and will quickly colonise.

While many are keen on using eco-friendly methods to banish weeds, guru and founder of , Chelsey, has warned about the popular online recommendation.

She said: “So you’ve heard vinegar is a great weed killer! You read on the internet that it is safer than other weed killers, it works and you’re going to use vinegar to kill all the weeds on your drive.

weed vinegar has killed weed in gravel path

“Good luck with that. Vinegar may kill some small weeds, but if the goal is to get rid of them forever. Vinegar is not the answer.

“Vinegar simply burns away the visible part of the weed, it may look dead, it may act dead but the roots are still intact – it will regrow.”

To truly obliterate weeds, you must attack the root, which vinegar fails to do as it can’t penetrate the foliage deeply enough to destroy the roots permanently.

However, there’s a workaround. Washing up liquid can strip the weeds’ leaves of their protective layer. Combining vinegar and dish soap could be an alternative solution for tackling those pesky leaves.

Teaspoon of rock salt

However, Chelsey has a much simpler, natural trick up her sleeve using rock salt – typically used to melt ice, to banish weeds from your driveway for good.

Chelsey explained: “Salt is a cheap, effective way to kill weeds and keep them gone. It’s versatile too, you can simply spread the rock salt by hand or dissolve it in water and spray it onto the ground.”

It’s not just cost-effective but also incredibly straightforward to use just scatter the rock salt into the nooks and crannies of your patio or gravel where weeds sprout, and the salt will dehydrate and exterminate them.

Chelsey advised: “Spread it across your drive neat or diluted and you’re done. Be careful not to get it onto the ground you want to grow in.”

Remember to apply this technique on a day when rain isn’t expected the following day, as it will wash the salt away.

Exercise caution with where you sprinkle the salt, as it won’t distinguish between a pesky weed and your prized garden plants. Be particularly mindful of lawns or flowerbeds.

Rock salt is readily available at most garden centres or online, offering a straightforward solution to maintain a pristine driveway or patio throughout the whole year.
