Dog trainer shares 14 quiet breeds that bark the least and are rarely noisy

If you’re considering getting a new furry friend but live in a place where constant barking might annoy your neighbors, it’s important to know which dog breeds are considered the quietest.

Surprisingly, some of the largest such as the Saint Bernard and Borzoi are the quietest. However, most dogs can be trained to quiet down needed.

, a New York-based dog trainer and pet expert on Animal Planet, said: “Essentially, it is about developing a relationship with your dog so they are happy to comply with your requests.

“In the case of barking, the request would be for a behavior that refocuses them on you and stops the barking.”

While it is possible to train dogs, some breeds are naturally quieter than others. If you want to ensure your dog is quiet, here are some of the most commonly known quiet breeds.

Akita

Akita’s are a large breed known for their quiet natures. They are hardwired for protecting those in their pack, so they often need training to keep his intolerance of strangers in check.

However, if well trained, these breeds will make a loving and loyal addition to the family. 

Basenji

Another quiet dog is the Basenji; these dogs actually cannot bark in the traditional way.

Their voice boxes are narrower than other breeds, and therefore they make more of a yodelling noise than a normal bark.

Borzoi

Borzois are also known for their silence. These slender, leggy and beautiful dogs are a hunting breed so they require daily exercise to keep them happy. 

Newfoundland

Another big quiet breed is Newfoundlands. These gentle giants will alert and defend their humans if there is a threat, but they’re not known to bark at random.

These dogs are docile and ideal for homes where frequent barking would be disruptive.
