It followed him being dismissed by Birmingham City last January, and the latest developments have cast doubts on whether Rooney will again take charge of a club in English football.
But now England’s former record goalscorer is reportedly being lined up for a lucrative job as a pundit.
According to , Rooney is in negotiations to start work on Match of the Day. The famous show is set to take on a new look next season, with host leaving at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
He will , who will present the Saturday night highlights on a rotation basis. And Rooney is now seemingly lined up to join them on a regular basis as a guest analyst.
His potential wage is said to be around £200,000 a year. However, a source was quoted saying that Rooney had yet to decide if he wanted to take the role as he weighs up his future in the game.

“Punditry is one of a number of options open to Wayne for the future,” they said. “He worked alongside Gary and co at the Euros last summer, and was a huge hit with viewers. He’s also eminently likeable with a forensic knowledge and love of the game.
“Match of the Day and a couple of other broadcasters are interested in having him on their programming. Wayne and the are in early stage negotiations but it is looking promising and he is taking some time to work out exactly what he wants to do next.”
In April, Rooney was set to make his debut on the show, but withdrew beforehand after citing a back problem. While in charge at , he won praise for his appearance on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports, alongside David Jones and .
