During the royal walkabout at the Sandringham estate on Christmas Day, William and Kate were spotted sporting matching navy and tartan outfits with , 11, , 9, and , 6.

The Princess of Wales, who celebrated her 43rd birthday last week, stunned in a hunter-green Alexander McQueen coat. She completed the look with a tartan scarf. The tartan print tied in to George and Louis’s ties – and Charlotte’s coat.

As the family attended the Princess of Wales’s Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey at the start of December, they all sported a, even if a subtle, shade of red in their outfits.

Fashion expert Amber Graafland told : “When Kate, and their children wear coordinated outfits it’s about more than just looking good. By complementing each other, and sticking to a colour theme, they are showcasing a united front.”

She added: “It’s a technique and Princes Kate use to show in tune they are when they attend official engagements together, and they also deploy it with their children.

“Adept at using their clothing to convey coded message, the Waleses know that by presenting a refined and harmonious image they convey a close-knit family with a strong bond.

“It also makes them instantly recognisable on the world stage.”

Speaking further about the Princess of Wales, she added: “Kate in particular uses her clothes to convey that not only is she a key part of the Royal Family, but she’s a wife and a mother.

“By dressing in the same colour she is reinforcing her family’s role within the monarchy, whilst also subtly reaffirming her role as a mother.
