Underrated BBC crime drama with 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating is now on Amazon Prime

A highly-rated is now available to watch on video. Ripper Street received a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is now more widely available for more people to enjoy.

The gripping drama follows the story of – a prolific serial killer who butchered a number of women in and around the Whitechapel District of London in 1888.

The programme kicks off six months after the last death by the killer but Detective Edmund Reid (played by ) and his policing team, H Division, are haunted by another set of murders making them dread if he has returned to East London.

Joining Macfadyen in the cast are MyAnna Buring, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg. While trying to keep order in the chaotic streets of Whitechapel, Reid is soon drawn into the seedy criminal underworld of Victorian London, where each new murder elicits fear that the Ripper may be back.

The story unfolds over five twist-filled series, with all of them now being available on Amazon Prime. The series initially ran from 2012 to 2016, when it was wrapped up as the producers felt they had reached the end of the story.

At the time of the show being cancelled, executive Producer Will Gould tweeted: “Not axed. Not cancelled. We got to the end of the story, that’s all. And v proud of that. #ripperstreet.”

Meanwhile, actor Matthew Lewis, who plays desk sergeant Samuel Drummond in the show, wrote: “There’s quite a difference between being cancelled and being allowed to finish your story. We got the latter. And it is good. #RipperStreet.”

The show was originally cancelled by the after two seasons, but Amazon Prime picked it up and ran it for an additional three seasons. Despite the first two seasons reportedly having low ratings, fans were outraged when it was taken off air.

Now, almost a decade after Ripper Street came to an end, fans still can’t get enough of the series. Posting to Twitter/X, one viewer recently shared: “Re-watching #RipperStreet for the 1st time in a decade. Almost forgot how good the series was!!”

Another added: “Post a cancelled TV show you wish would come back. #RipperStreet,” while a third said: “Being confined to quarters with ack, so I’m re-watching #RipperStreet.

“My word, it’s good. The way they capture the language. The little details such as pens, ephemera, carts, tools that feature.”
