claimed he can still “do some damage” after reaching the fourth round of the aged 38.

But the French veteran insisted his dream is not to win the but to “be old with a lot of kids”.

Monfils became the oldest ever winner on the ATP Tour when he won in Auckland last week.

And the world No.41 brought his good early season form across the Tasman Sea to shock No.4 seed 3-6 7-5 7-6 6-4.

Monfils celebrated with a dance in the Margaret Court Arena after becoming only the second after to make the last 16 in Melbourne at the age of 38 or more since 1988.

“That was my way to express my joy,” said the former world No.6. “It was an unbelievable match. I have a strong belief in myself and a strong belief that I can still do some damage. Here we are in the second week of the .”

It is only the second time Monfils has beaten a top-five opponent at a Grand Slam, with his first against David Ferrer at the 2008 French Open.

Monfils reached the semi-finals in Paris that year – and again at the 2016 US Open – but has never won a Major in 64 previous appearances.

But the Frenchman, who has a daughter Skai with his Ukrainian wife Elina Svitolina, said: “It is not even a dream to win the tournament. My dream is to be old and with a lot of kids and healthy.

“My dream is to have an unbelievable family. Tennis is cool. Of course, you want to have a goal, a dream, whatever. But my dream is out there.”

US Open finalist Fritz, who had dropped only eight games in the first two rounds, said: “He played really, really well. Not too much I could do.”
