Monty Don opened up about a ‘terrible’ health battle
Gardeners World star Monty Don has opened up on a ‘terrible’ battle as he pinpoints one thing that has helped him get through it.
On the podcast, Monty says his love of gardening has helped him on a personal level. The expert has previously opened up about his struggles with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Speaking about how gardening has helped, Monty said: “It enables you to deal with loss and hopelessness and fear and anxiety and you know depression, that terrible sort of negativity that comes with it.”
Monty says other gardeners have reached out to him to explain how the hobby helps their own mental health.

He added: “Gardening gives them hope, gardening connects them to something bigger than themselves, it connects them to the rhythm of seasons.”
“It’s to be aware that all good times are followed by fallow times, but which are also followed by good times.
“It’s not just onwards and upwards upwards upwards, you have to accept that there are cycles and things, and that is very empowering and reassuring.”
Monty has previously opened up about his experiences with SAD. On an epsiode of the Travel Diaries podcast he revealed he likes to travel abroad during the winter months to “recharge the batteries”.
According to the NHS: “Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern.
