Spain, Greece and Italy’s ugliest seaside towns have been named, with them being dubbed “Europe’s answer to Skegness”.

revealed Europe’s prettiest and ugliest seaside towns, with Ostia in Italy, La Linea in Spain, and Laganas in Greece all making the list.

Ostia is a large neighbourhood on the outskirts of Rome. It is now a major archaeological site known as Ostia Antica, having been the port city of Ancient Rome.

It is the city’s only district on the coast and acts as a seaside resort, with many Romans spending their summer holidays there.

The Telegraph said that while the sand was “more or less okay”, the water “really was to be avoided”. The outlet said that the modern apartment blocks and lack of greenery also added to the less-than-desirable atmosphere.

La Linea Spain

La Línea de la Concepción, often just called La Linea, is a city in Spain’s Cadiz region. It lies on a narrow strip of sandy beach on the Bay of Gibraltar.

The city is a major supplier of fruit and vegetables to Gibraltar; other industries include the manufacture of cork, liquor, and fish paste. Much of the population finds work in Gibraltar.

The Telegraph said “history has not been kind” to the city, with high-rise tower blocks and a nearby oil refinery making the area “unattractive”. It also has a reputation as a “crime capital”.

DON’T MISS [REPORT]

Laganas is a town on the south coast of Zakynthos, a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is a major tourist resort, with over 100 bars and clubs that fill with visitors in the busy summer months.

An attraction is the migration of the loggerhead sea turtles. Every summer, the turtles migrate to the bay to lay their eggs on the beach protected by ecologists.

But despite this, the Telegraph included it on their list, saying the pavements are packed with “bare-chested lads and gangs of girls clad in skimpy bikinis”. The newspaper said that “anyone over 25 will probably want to avoid” the town.
