Controversial tennis star at centre of police match-fixing probe as phone seized

Tennis star Bernard Tomic reportedly had his phone seized as part of a probe into alleged match-fixing in 2022. Police dropped their investigation after months of research failed to find enough evidence to proceed with a criminal charge.

According to the report by , a multi-agency strike force focused on Tomic after two of his matches allegedly featured “suspicious bets via online bookmakers”, including an tie that year. The Grand Slam contest in question was his qualifying match against Russian player Roman Safiullin.

The Australian publication also report that the other match was one the controversial 32-year-old played in Turkey a few months earlier.

It is claimed that the International Tennis Integrity Authority (ITIA) conducted their own investigation. That included seizing Tomic’s phone and quizzing the former world No. 17 in connection with the matter.

A Tennis Australia spokesperson confirmed their integrity unit engaged with the authorities to investigate the matter.

“Tennis Australia’s integrity team has worked with the ITIA and law enforcement agencies since first alerted to concerns relating to betting activity in tennis,” they said.

“[Tennis Australia] integrity’s role in any investigation has predominantly been one of support throughout. We have been advised there is no current police investigation into this matter.”

The investigation reportedly became ‘dormant’ in the absence of further information. There is no suggestion the tennis star is guilty of any criminal conduct.

Tomic, an eccentric character, hit the headlines last year when in Arkansas. He subsequently tested positive for .

Tomic confirmed his retirement from the match and later tested positive for . As he walked courtside to confirm his withdrawal, the commentator continued: “All right, that does it. So, retiring due to illness is Bernard Tomic.

“Well, that’s a very awkward way to end, and a rather ‘Bernie’ way to end, isn’t it? Tough way to go out. Tomic now, we’ll see if he’s able to recover. And again, how the heck did he win that match [against Thai-Son Kwiatkowski] a couple of days ago?”
