made himself hugely unpopular with viewers when it emerged that his party, the , had abstained from voting for an enquiry into grooming gangs.

The response was branded “wholly inadequate”, as it was pointed out that the public knew where leader and leader stood on the thorny matter. However, Davey then caused further fury by declaring that “boot-licking” Farage was “weak”.

Talking to Ellie Costello and Stephen Dixon on this morning’s show, he dismissed the idea of him becoming a conduit for UK-USA relations. “Farage is so weak because Trump knows he just wants to pursue Trump’s interest in the UK rather than the UK’s interest in the United States,” he sneered.

Asked what he thought a Trump presidency would mean for the “special relationship” between the two nations, Davey shot back: “I’m quite worried about it, to be honest.” He suggested the Republican leader could impose “trade wars and tariffs”, pointing out the earlier tariffs on Scotch whisky and British steel, and quizzed whether Trump’s policies could negatively impact British “prosperity and security”.

However, he then stuck the knife in to his opponent, Farage, as he revealed that he’d been reading Trump’s book The Art of the Deal. “He says if you’re weak, or desperate for a deal – a bit like the Conservatives or Reform, he smells blood,” he declared.

“If you’re dealing with Trump, you’ve got to be strong by showing him that you have alternatives and aren’t just reliant on him,” Ed continued.

“He respects people who aren’t just weak and wanting to lick his boots, like seems to want to do.”

Ellie Costello then informed him that a political strategist had told GB News Trump would be “the perfect conduit” between the US and the UK – a comment which drove Ed to burst out laughing.

His voice dripped with derision as he held up a copy of Trump’s book for viewers and insisted: “When people just want to lick Trump’s boots and be his best mate, they’re not going to get a good deal!”

“Really weak???? has the strength of 10 lions whereas you like jumping up and down on a trampoline,” one fan indignantly replied.

Another took to X to warn: “I’m close to blocking GB News for giving airtime to these absolute morons!”

“This p***k should be stripped of his knighthood for his inactions over the post office scandal yet he’s on TV spouting his c**p and calling for a return to the EU. Him and Starmer are a disgrace!” blasted a third.

Meanwhile, on the subject of the grooming gangs, another raged: “Ed instructed his MPs to abstain on the vote for a National inquiry and has no business now piously commenting on what the Govt has proposed. The LDs are 6th Form protesters; they are not serious politicians…”
