Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will travel to Warsaw for the talks
Sir Keir Starmer will travel to Poland on Friday for negotiations with Donald Tusk on a new defence and security deal.
The Prime Minister will meet his Polish counterpart in Warsaw for talks on the treaty aimed at tackling shared threats including Russian aggression and people smuggling gangs.
Ahead of the visit to the Eastern European country, Sir Keir said: “The UK and Poland are longstanding allies and our co-operation stretches back for generations.
“With ever-increasing threats to Europe’s security, now is the time to take our partnership to the next level, so we can ensure we’re tackling the big issues that rebound on the British people at home – from Putin’s aggression to the vile people smuggling gangs trading in human misery.
“It is only through closer collaboration with our most important partners such as Poland that we’ll protect the UK’s national security – the key foundation on which I’ll deliver my Plan for Change.”
Don’t miss…
It comes after the PM made his first visit to war-torn six months after entering No 10.
Sir Keir pledged that the UK would “play our part” in guaranteeing Kyiv’s security following any peace deal.
He said: “Let’s be clear, we all want this war to end, no one wants that more than Ukrainians, but right now Putin shows no sign of wanting peace.”
The trip coincided with a drone attack by ‘s forces on the Ukrainian capital.
The visit came just days before returns to the White House, potentially signalling a shift in US support for Kyiv’s war effort in favour of a push for a peace deal.
