1. Tumble dryer
The expert said: “Tumble dryers are one of the most energy-intensive appliances in the home. A single cycle can use as much energy as several other appliances combined.
“To save money, consider air-drying your clothes wherever possible or using your dryer’s energy-saving settings.”
With an average cycle consuming around 4.5kWh, tumble dryers are a luxury which can quickly add up. By reducing usage and only using them when truly needed, you could save money.
2. Dishwashers
Dishwashers are super convenient, but they can contribute to high electricity bills if used inefficiently.
The energy expert explained: “Dishwashers can quickly add to your energy costs if used inefficiently. Running the dishwasher only when it’s full and selecting energy-efficient modes can make a noticeable difference to your monthly bills.”

Each cycle uses about 3.6kWh, so only running it when it is full and picking energy-saving modes are key.
3. Fridge-freezers
Fridge freezers are essential, but they’re also one of the biggest continuous energy users in the home.
Gordon noted: “While fridge freezers are essential, they’re always on, making them a constant energy drain. Simple habits like defrosting regularly and keeping the door closed can reduce their impact on your bills.”
4. Washing machines
Washing machines are another appliance which can influence energy usage, particularly if you frequently run small loads or use a hot water cycle.
The pro explained: “Switching to eco settings and washing at lower temperatures can significantly lower energy consumption without compromising cleanliness.”
The majority of detergents work at lower temperatures, so make sure to check the manufacturer’s notes for further details.
5. Ovens
Ovens can be a “hidden energy culprit”, especially if preheated unnecessarily or left on longer than needed.
Make sure to use alternatives where possible such as air fryers and microwaves for smaller meals, or batch cook when using the oven to lead to substantial savings.
According to the expert, electric ovens use about 0.87kWh per hour, while gas ovens consume around 1.5kWh.
Gordon added: “January can be a tough month for energy bills, but being mindful of how and when you use these appliances can lead to significant savings over time.
