Antonio Perez Garibay, father of axed star Sergio, has teased that his son could be moving to Formula E. The Mexican racer was dropped at the end of the 2024 campaign after the toughest season of his career and is spending a year on the sidelines.

As one of the world’s leading open-wheel racing series, Formula E has long provided a landing spot for talent leaving the paddock. In 2025, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nyck de Vries and Pascal Wehrlein will be among the five former F1 stars on the grid, and in previous years, that number has been even higher.

According to his father, Perez could become the latest F1 star to make the transition. “I would never have imagined Formula E, and I would be careful because we could have Checo Pérez racing here,” Perez Snr told Estadio Deportes.

“Of course, without any problem, [I see him racing here] the category has been around for 11 years, it is very young, today it is number two in the world, and within the next five years it will be number one. That is why I am here. I am looking forward to what comes next.”

Formula E co-founder Alberto Longo opened the door for the six-time Grand Prix winner after Perez Snr’s comments. “We welcome him with open arms,” he confirmed.

“I also say that it is not the decision of the championship’s promoters, which is us, but rather his decision and then that of the main teams because, in the end, they are the ones who decide who sits in each of their cars.”

This development comes after the former man revealed his love for life after F1. The 34-year-old has been extremely quiet on social media channels lately, taking time away from the public eye to enjoy quality time with his family in Mexico.

Speaking to children at the Leon State Fair, Perez was asked whether he would consider an F1 return. “Honestly, I don’t know,” he replied. “It’s too soon to have an answer. Everything happened very quickly at the end of the season, so I didn’t expect it.

“Now I’m in an incredible, dreamy position, which I didn’t even realise I was in, so if you ask me now, I don’t know. I’m very happy with my life, very excited about what’s ahead. For sure, if I receive a good, interesting project, then I’ll definitely consider it and think about it. It will all come in its own time.

“For now, my priority in the months ahead is to have fun, do what I haven’t been able to, travel, be with my family… In the next six months, I’ll make a decision on what I want for the next step of my career.”
