American star Tristan Boyer was told by his dad that he was forced to evacuate from their home in California and their community had been “destroyed” as a result of the LA fires, before being urged to keep playing at the .
Boyer, a qualifier, took on Alex de Minaur in the second round and reached out to his father who had remained in the United States while the rest of his family travelled to Melbourne to watch him play.
He reached out to his dad, Chris, after devastation tore apart the state and uprooted tens of thousands of families. He was informed that their home is safe for now and that he should continue playing, but his dad’s “heart breaks” at the destruction caused.
In a text message shared by , Boyer text his father: “Morning dad, are you OK?”
His question was met with a positive response, as Chris had relocated to a friend’s home in Pasadena, informing his son that he should carry on.
“Good morning, I’m fine tea,” his dad wrote back. “All is good here. We are fortunate that the house survived the night. our beloved Altadena is gone though. Hundreds of homes destroyed, the village is destroyed, the restaurant we went to gone.
“The club gone, the golf course clubhouse gone. My heart breaks. But soldiers match on. So you focus on what you have to do and don’t worry about anything here. I’m great considering everything. And the house is fine. Love you so much. I’m so proud of you.”
