BBC Breakfast halted as presenter makes ‘breaking news’ announcement

was interrupted on Thursday morning for a breaking news announcement. Sarah Campbell and Roger Johnson, who were presenting the show, turned to their co-star Ben Boulos, who delivered the news.

Sarah said: In the last few minutes, we have had an official update on how the UK is performing; Ben is here with this this morning. Ben, what can you tell us?”

Ben explained: “Well, we know it is the government’s priority and this gives us the latest picture on how the economy is doing.

“Yes, the UK economy grew by 0.1 percent in November last year, that is according to figures out in the last few minutes. It is the thinnest of margin and it is below expectations.”

A breaking news banner appeared on the screen, as Ben continued: “Now GDP, Gross Domestic Product, is a measure of how much we are making, doing, building, buying, and selling.

“More of that economic activity is seen as a good thing generally. The growth means more money going around, more jobs created, more pay rises and in term that means the government getting more in taxes from people to pay for services, and that is why the figure is watched so closely.”

He added: “When you drill down into the detail, it’s an interesting picture across different parts of the economy.

“Construction, so that’s things like house building, grew. Services, the biggest part of the economy, grew, but only slightly. A particular bright spot is pubs, restaurants, and IT services. Production, on the other hand, fell.”

He explained that this was “just an estimate,” so it could be revised “up or down” before stating inflation had gone down in September and October.
