Brothers Keepers hitman and convicted murderer Tyrel Nguyen is stabbed in B.C. prison

Tyrel Hieu Nguyen was seriously injured in the Jan. 9 attack at Kent Institution in B.C. and taken to hospital.

A Surrey hitman for the Brothers Keepers gang sentenced a year ago for two contracted murders has been stabbed in prison, Postmedia has learned.

Tyrel Hieu Nguyen was seriously injured in the Jan. 9 attack at Kent Institution in B.C. and taken to hospital.

On Tuesday, Kent assistant warden Kim MacPherson issued a news release saying an unnamed inmate at the maximum-security prison had been attacked.

Sources confirmed that the victim was Nguyen, who was stabbed in the torso.

“The injured inmate was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment, MacPherson said, adding that both the RCMP and prison officials are investigating.

“The assailant has been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken. No staff members were injured during this incident.”

MacPherson said “the safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.”

But John Randle, regional president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, said violence within federal prisons has been on the rise, especially with larger numbers of incarcerated gang inmates.

“Over the last several months we have seen a sharp spike in violent incidents in our federal max and medium institutions,” Randle said Wednesday.

“We recently had an inmate attempt to stab an officer at a medium security facility.  Along with that we are seeing record number of weapons and other contraband seized at all security levels. Drugs are rampant in our jails, with drones dropping amounts of drugs never before seen.”

He said violent attacks are now a daily occurrence inside B.C. federal institutions and across the country.

“Gangs are being allowed to operate with minimal to no consequences from Correctional Service Canada, instead leaving front line officers to suffer higher than ever assault rates.”

He was also found guilty of attempted murder of Gary Kang, Randy’s brother, and associate Camilo Alonso on the night of Kang’s murder after victims and killer had agreed to meet in Surrey’s Bolivar Park.

Ironically, a former Nguyen associate, whose name is protected by a publication ban, testified at his trial that the 2017 Kang murder was ordered after a prison dispute between Brothers Keepers founder Gavin Grewal and Red Scorpion Jamie Bacon, who was close to Kang.

Grewal was murdered in December 2017 after he was released from jail. The unsolved murder was believed to be in retaliation for the Kang hit.

The Nguyen associate, identified in court as AB, got his former friend to make incriminating admissions on a white board during an undercover investigation in the fall of 2019. Nguyen was charged in December of that year.

Gropper heard that Nguyen was paid $100,000 for the Kang murder and $30,000 for the second hit in which Malhi was mistakenly killed.
